May 22, 2009

(Cambridge, On) Friday, May 22 – The Hon. Gary Goodyear, Member of Parliament for Cambridge-North Dumfries and Minister of State (Science & Technology), on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today attended Mill Race Park to announce the Government of Canada’s support for  local arts and culture in Cambridge, Ontario.

“I’m thrilled that our government is supporting the 17th edition of the Mill Race Festival of Traditional Folk Music,” said Minister Goodyear. “This four day event, which promotes public engagement through traditional folk music and dance performances, as well as artisan vendors, music workshops and a children’s area, is certainly a Cambridge summer highlight to be proud of.”

“Our Government is proud to support the Mill Race Folk Society,” said Minister Moore. “By partnering with communities to support activities that celebrate our shared history and our rich cultural diversity, we are fulfilling our commitment to strengthen our communities and support arts, culture and heritage.”

The Mill Race Folk Society has received funding of $19,500 to help present its Mill Race Festival of Traditional Folk Music, which will take place from July 31 to August 3, 2009.

The Government of Canada created the Building Communities through Arts and Heritage program in September 2007. This program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in local activities that present arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage. This program will benefit many community events and celebrations throughout Canada this year.
