On January 12, 2010, a strong earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale struck close to Port-au-Prince. Initial reports indicate that the earthquake caused extensive damage to infrastructure. Power and telecommunications are severely disrupted. The Government of Canada extends its sincerest condolences to those affected by the earthquake. Canadian officials in Ottawa and in Port-au-Prince are in contact with local authorities to clarify the impact of the earthquake and how Canada can best help. Canada is in contact with trusted humanitarian partners with a presence in the region to identify humanitarian needs resulting from this earthquake.
Canadians in need of assistance are encouraged to make their way to the Canadian Embassy in Port-au-Prince on Delmas Road, between Delmas 75 and 71. Canadians seeking emergency consular assistance in the area should contact the
Emergency Operations Centre or call 613-996-8885 collect. The Operations Centre of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
